It was a week for individual performances on the gridiron.
After a Week 1 that featured a flurry of wild finishes and a handful of top-20 upsets, Friday night saw little of that, but plenty of impressive stat lines.
Only three teams in the Globe Top 20 poll lost Friday, and all fell to ranked teams. No. 5 BC High fell to No. 6 Central Catholic, 28-7, as the Raiders pounded the rock and pulled away in the second half; No. 9 Duxbury was tripped up by No. 8 Scituate, 27-15, marking the first time Sailors head coach Herb Devine beat the Dragons in the regular season in his 18 seasons; and No. 14 North Attleborough, the defending Division 3 champion, was defeated, 21-7, by No. 4 King Philip, which moved down to D3 this fall after making four consecutive D2 Super Bowls.

    2. Star of the Day
Back in 1908, Everett’s George Brickley — who went on to play both professional football and baseball and coach Woburn High football — became the first Massachusetts high school football player to score eight touchdowns in a game. One hundred and two years later, in 2010, Andover’s Andrew Coke also scored eight touchdowns.
On Friday, Greater Lawrence senior Gustavo Varela came within one score of matching the state record, scoring all seven of his team’s touchdowns in a 52-30 win over Cathedral. Varela, a 5-foot-9-inch, 185-pound back who ran for 1,912 yards as a sophomore and had 341 in a game last season, finished with 173 rushing yards.
