It’s a new week, which means it’s time to mine Landman’s latest episode for North Texas Easter eggs. The West Texas-set oil rig drama, co-created by Taylor Sheridan, has shot across Dallas-Fort Worth. The script, accordingly, reflects the milieu.
The second season is coming to a close. Here are the local ties in its ninth and penultimate episode, “Plans, Tears, and Sirens.”
Texas Christian University
The Fort Worth school gets considerable screen time in this episode. Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) arrives there for cheerleading camp ahead of the semester’s start and her mother, Angela (Ali Larter), is weepy as they part ways.
“My little dove is flying away,” she says.
“It’s just a week, Mama,” Ainsley replies, later lugging her bags into Colby Hall, a real-life student dorm.
Neiman Marcus in Fort Worth
To quell her anxiety about Ainsley leaving the nest, Angela arranges for some retail therapy at a Neiman Marcus. An exterior shot shows the luxury department store’s Fort Worth location.
“You’ll pump all your love into a child, only to watch them outgrow you,” Angela says to a Neiman’s employee while splayed out on a couch.
The employee lends a sympathetic ear and lines up dresses on a rack for Angela. Soon, though, Angela is back in mama bear mode. A distressed Ainsley calls, venting about her roommate Paigyn, a vegan who owns a pet ferret, uses they/them pronouns and doesn’t like music.
Bowie House
Angela gets Ainsley out of her dorm and books her a suite for the week at the upscale Bowie House in Fort Worth. Sam Elliott, who plays Tommy’s father, T.L., was honored in November at the hotel for the Lone Star Film Festival’s gala.
